LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE

Christ is the Light of the World.

He is here with us now.

LIGHTING the CANDLE of JOY

Rejoice in the Lord always!  On this third Sunday of Advent,we

light the Candle of Joy.

The Messiah’s coming fills our hearts with joy, but we can’t

help wishing that the world was a kinder, gentler place.

Sometimes it seems like a very sad place to bring a baby, even

though that baby brings us great joy.

(The third candle is lit.)  Let us pray:

God of Joy, we wish for a starburst of hope.  We long for

everlasting peace.  We crave a life-song of joy.  In Advent and

throughout the year, grant we may be your voice, your hands,

and your feet in the world.  May we bring joy to others.  Amen.

All sing: VU 7 Hope is a Star  verse 1 - 3

CALL TO WORSHIP

Dear God, today we light the candle for joy in our world.  May it

burn brightly and warmly in our hearts.

Enflamed by your empowering love, we gather, O God,

willing to be stilled, yet willing to be moved.  We come,

so our lives might continue to be enlarged by you in

greater fullness, kindness, and joy for the living.

*HYMN  VU 2           “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus”

OPENING PRAYER

Holy Spirit, whose shadowed presence extends fully into our midst,

we hold tenderly the promise of something more, something beyond

what we can see with our eyes or touch with our hands, or even

make real with our efforts alone.  We yearn for the seeds of peace,

justice, and goodness to bloom in the desert places of the world and

we wait with eager longing for that time.  Inspire us in this time of

holding, give us renewed passion for our work, and may we rejoice

even as we wait.  We ask in Jesus’ name and we pray as he

taught us:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy

kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;

for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever

and ever.  Amen.
